Article No. 88-11-1

FORD:

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988 TOPAZ, COUGAR, SABLE

ISSUE:

A luggage compartment door that will not open with the key may be caused by a broken cam inside the latch assembly. The material the cam
was made out of may have been porous allowing the cam to break at high stress locations during operation.

ACTION:

To correct this, install a new design luggage compartment door latch assembly that has an improved cam inside. Refer to the following
service procedure for removal and installation information.

1.

Open the luggage compartment door by using the remote release (if equipped) or by removing the rear seat to access the latch from inside of the
trunk.

NOTE:

VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH REMOTE RELEASE MUST HAVE THE SWITCH TRANSFERRED TO THE NEW LATCH ASSEMBLY.

2.

Remove and throw away the existing lugggage compartment door latch assembly. Refer to the appropriate Car Shop Manual, Section 44-10.

3.

Install a new latch.
