Water Pump: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1.

Drain the engine coolant and disconnect the battery ground cable.

2.

Loosen the four water pump pulley retaining bolts, using the accessory belt tension to keep the pulley from turning.

3.

Loosen the alternator belt adjuster jack screw and remove the alternator belt.

4.

Using a 1/2" breaker bar rotate the automatic tensioner down and to the left.  Remove the accessory drive belt.

5.

Remove the two nuts and single bolt retaining the automatic belt tensioner to the engine and remove the assembly.

6.

Remove the four water pump pulley bolts and remove the pulley from the vehicle.
NOTE:  On some vehicles the pulley will not have enough clearance to facilitate removal from the vehicle.  In this case, allow the pulley to
remain on the hub after the bolts have been removed.

7.

Remove the heater hoses from the water pump.

8.

Remove the 9 water pump to engine retaining bolts and nuts then remove the water pump from the vehicle.

INSTALLATION

1.

Clean the water pump mating surfaces, using caution not to damage the aluminum housings.

2.

Coat the water pump side of a new gasket with Gasket and Trim Adhesive (Ford part# D7AZ-19B508-B, or equivalent).  Place the gasket on the
water pump.
