ISSUE:
A "chirping" noise from the accessory drive belt may be caused by a misaligned power steering pump pulley. The 1988/89 Taurus/Sable
and Continental Shop Manual incorrectly states to install the pulley flush to the end of the pump shaft. The correct procedure is to
"underpress" the pulley .020" on the end of the shaft.
ACTION:
Re-align the power steering pump pulley. Refer to the following revised service procedure.
NOTE:
UNDERPRESSED MEANS THAT THE END OF THE PUMP SHAFT IS BELOW THE PULLEY HUB FACE.
1.
Install the pulley three-quarters of the way on the pump shaft. Use the steering pump puller/replacer tool (T65P-3A733-C).

Remove the pump puller/replacer tool (T65P-3A733-C) and then use it with the newly released steering pump pulley gauge tool (T90L-3A733-A)
to complete the pulley installation until the .020" boss has contacted the pump shaft surface, Figure 1.

NOTE:
MAKE SURE THE .020" BOSS ON THE GAUGE BLOCK FACES THE PULLEY, FIGURE 1.
NOTE:
THE SMALL DIAMETER THREADS MUST BE FULLY ENGAGED IN THE PUMP SHAFT BEFORE PRESSING ON THE PULLEY.
3.
Confirm that "chirping" is eliminated.
Please revise your Car Shop Manuals for the pulley installation specification to read -.020 +/- .010".
