Wheel Cylinder: Service and Repair
Disassembly And Assembly

NOTE:  A slight amount of fluid is normally present and acts as a lubricant for the rear wheel cylinder. It is not necessary to remove the rear wheel
cylinder from the rear brake backing plate to disassemble, inspect, hone and overhaul the rear wheel cylinder. Removal is necessary only if the rear
wheel cylinder is damaged or scored beyond service.

Rear wheel cylinders should not be disassembled unless they are leaking. Carefully pull lower edges of rear wheel cylinder boots away from rear wheel
cylinder. Note whether interior is wet with brake fluid. Excessive fluid indicates leakage past piston cups and a need to overhaul rear wheel cylinder.

Disassembly 

1. Remove brake shoe and lining assembly.
2. Disengage rear wheel cylinder boots from retaining grooves in rear wheel cylinder casting. Remove each boot and piston from rear wheel cylinder

as an assembly.

3. Remove rear wheel cylinder rubber cups and spring and expander assemblies from rear wheel cylinder bore.
4. Discard all rubber parts.
5. Remove wheel cylinder bleeder screw from rear wheel cylinder.
6. Wash all parts in clean denatured alcohol.
7. Inspect pistons for scratches, scoring or other damage. Replace if necessary. Always replace rubber cups and dust boots.
8. Inspect cylinder bore for score marks or rust. If either condition is present, cylinder bore must be honed. However, cylinder should not be honed

more than 0.08 mm (0.003 inch) beyond its original diameter.

9. Wash rear wheel cylinder with clean denatured alcohol after honing. Dry it with compressed air.

10. Make sure bleeder hole is open.

Assembly 

NOTE:  Use all parts in the wheel cylinder service kit. Make sure wheel cylinder bleeder screw is in upper hole of rear wheel cylinder.

1. Apply light coating of High Performance Dot 3 Motor Vehicle Brake Fluid C6AZ-19542-AB or DOT 3 equivalent meeting Ford specification

ESA-M6C25-A to all internal parts. If DOT 3 is not available use DOT 4 Brake Fluid meeting Ford specification SAE-J-1704-DOT 4.

2. Thread wheel cylinder bleeder screw into rear wheel cylinder.
3. Insert return spring and cup expander assembly, and pistons into their respective positions in cylinder bore. Place a boot over each end of rear 

wheel cylinder.
