Crankshaft Main Bearing: Service and Repair
Removal and Installation
NOTE: The crankshaft main bearings are precision selective fit. To check the bearing clearances or to select-fit a new crankshaft main bearing,
Removal
1. Remove oil pan.
2. Remove oil pump.
3. Remove spark plugs to allow easy crankshaft rotation.
4. Replace one crankshaft main bearing at a time, leaving the other crankshaft main bearings securely fastened. Remove crankshaft main bearing cap
to which new crankshaft main bearings are to be installed.
5. NOTE: Rotate remover tool against end of crankshaft main bearing opposite locating tang.
Insert Main Bearing Insert Tool 303-003 (TOOL-6331-E) or equivalent in the oil hole in the crankshaft.
6. Rotate crankshaft in the direction of the engine rotation to force the crankshaft main bearing out of the cylinder block.
7. Clean crankshaft journals. Inspect journals and thrust faces (crankshaft thrust main bearings for nicks, burrs or bearing pickup that would cause
premature bearing wear.
8. If the crankshaft rear oil seal is to be replaced.
Installation
1. Lightly oil all bolt and stud bolt threads with Motorcraft Super Premium 5W30 Motor Oil XO-5W30-QSP or equivalent meeting Ford
specification WSS-M2C153-G before installation except those specifying special sealant.
Lubricate and position the, upper crankshaft main bearing on the crankshaft journal with the plain end started into the side of the cylinder block
with the locking tang slot. Line up the crankshaft main bearing tang with the slot in the cylinder block.
2. Install Main Bearing Insert Tool 303-003 (TOOL-6331-E) or equivalent in the crankshaft journal oil hole.
3. With the crankshaft main bearing and tool in position, rotate the crankshaft so that the tool catches the edge of the crankshaft main bearing, pushes
into position, and seats in the cylinder block. Remove tool.
4. Install crankshaft main bearing in the crankshaft main bearing cap.
5. If crankshaft main bearing clearance is to be checked,
6. If No. 1 or No. 2 crankshaft main bearing was removed, lubricate the crankshaft main bearing surface with Engine Assembly Lubricant
D9AZ-19579-D or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M99C80-A and install main bearing cap. Tighten retaining bolts to 75-85 Nm
(56-62 ft. lbs.).
7. If the rear crankshaft main bearing was removed, perform the following:
a. Remove all traces of sealant from the main bearing cap to cylinder block parting line.
b. NOTE: Prior to applying sealer, clean sealing surfaces with Metal Surface Cleaner F4AZ-19A536-RA or equivalent meeting Ford
specification WSE-M513392-A, to remove all residues that may interfere with the sealer's ability to adhere.
Apply a 6 mm (1/4-inch) dot of Silicone Gasket and Sealant F7AZ-19554-EA or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSK-M2G343-A4
between rear main bearing cap and cylinder block as shown.
c. Lubricate bearing surfaces with Engine Assembly Lubricant D9AZ-19579-D or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M99C80-A, and
install main bearing cap. Tighten retaining bolts to 75-85 Nm (56-62 ft. lbs.).
8. If the crankshaft thrust main bearings were removed, perform the following:
a. Lubricate bearing surface with Engine Assembly Lubricant D9AZ-19579-D or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M99C80-A. Install
the main bearing cap with the bolts finger-tight.
b. Pry crankshaft forward against the thrust surface on the upper crankshaft thrust main bearing while holding the main bearing cap to the rear.
This aligns thrust rear surfaces on both halves of the crankshaft thrust main bearing.
c. While holding the crankshaft forward, tighten main bearing cap retaining bolts to 75-85 Nm (56-62 ft. lbs.).
9. Install oil pump screen cover and tube and oil pump.
10. Install oil pan.
