Torque Converter: Service and Repair
AX4S
Cleaning and Inspection
When the torque converter is replaced, the following procedure must be performed:
1. The cooler lines must be thoroughly cleaned by backward and forward Flushing.
2. The in-tank and auxiliary coolers must be thoroughly cleaned by backward and forward flushing.
3. All transmission fluid coolers, cooler tubes, and Cooler Bypass Valves (CBV) if equipped, must be thoroughly cleaned.
4. Perform the Transmission Fluid Cooler Flow Test.
5. If the transmission cooling system fails the Transmission Fluid Cooler-Flow Test, the fluid cooler, cooler bypass valve, and/or cooler lines must be
replaced.
6. If the Coolers are to be replaced use only factory-approved service parts.
If the torque converter is not being replaced the following procedures must be performed:
7. The torque converter must be thoroughly cleaned.
a. Torque converters with drain plugs may be cleaned by using Torque Converter/Oil Cooler Cleaner.
b. Torque converters without drain plugs can be cleaned by hand. Partially fill the torque converter using only recommended transmission fluid
for the applicable transmission. Hand-agitate the torque converter and then thoroughly drain the fluid. Refill the torque converter with new
fluid specified for transmission, and reinstall.
8. The in-tank and auxiliary coolers must be thoroughly cleaned by forward and backward flushing.
9. The cooler lines must be thoroughly cleaned by backward and forward flushing.
10. All transmission fluid coolers, cooler tubes, and Cooler Bypass Valves (CBV) if equipped, must be thoroughly cleaned.
11. Perform the Transmission Fluid Cooler Flow Test.
12. If the transmission cooling system fails the Transmission Fluid Cooler Flow Test, the fluid cooler, cooler bypass valve, and/or cooler lines must be
replaced.
13. If the coolers are to be replaced, use only factory-approved service parts.
Torque Converter Flushing
NOTE: Mineral spirits used to clean the torque converter must be fresh, non-chlorinated and non-halogenated.
Following the instructions included with Rotunda Torque Converter/Oil Cooler Cleaner 307-F011 (014-00028) or equivalent, flush out the torque
converter.
After flushing the torque converter, follow these steps:
^
Thoroughly drain the remaining solvent through the impeller hub.
^
Add 1.9 liters (2.0 quarts) of clean automatic transmission fluid to the torque converter.
^
Agitate the solution inside the torque converter by hand.
^
Thoroughly drain the torque converter through the impeller hub.
Torque Converter Leakage Check
NOTE: Prior to performing the following test procedure, the PCM Quick Test should be completed and ALL diagnostic trouble codes corrected.
If welds on the torque converter indicate leakage, remove the torque converter and make the following check.
1. Clean the outer surface of the torque converter.
2. Install Rotunda Leak Check Tool and Gasket 307-F015 (014-R1075) into the torque converter hub.
