1984 Tempo/Topaz Early Driveability Concerns - Information Update

The purpose of this letter is to provide you with diagnostic and service information for 1984 Tempo/Topaz early driveability concerns. This information
contained in Attachment I is supplemental to or updates that contained in a letter to you dated August 19, 1983.

These concerns are generally low frequency, but may be difficult to diagnose and service. TSB's have been or will be publisbed for the information
attached to this letter and the letter of August 19, 1983. The wiring harness for the 1-2 shift sag (ATX) was not made available on September 15, 1983 as
indicated in the August 19, 1983 letter. The harness was redesigned and will be available October 15, 1983. Warranty claim preparation instructions are
contained in Attachment II.

Surge - Moderate to Heavy Acceleration Tempo/Topaz ATX

Some early production Tempo/Topaz vehicles with the ATX may experience a surge condition under moderate or heavy acceleration. To alleviate this
condition the following diagnostics should be performed:

1.

Verify the drive complaint by performing a road test. Ensure symptom is not a result of A/C clutch cycling.

2.

Perform "quick" EEC system check; correct system faults as required. If system is O.K., go to Step 3.

3.

Replace carburetor with E43Z-9510-ZE. Refer to Car Shop Manual, Section 24, if necessary.

4.

Replace the transmission TV shaft and lever assembly with E43Z-7F480-C. This must be done with the carburetor change to prevent a bind or
hang-up of the TV control linkage. The new part (shaft) has a 17~ index revision on the tang which attaches to the carburetor lever.

5.

Check the vacuum line to the vacuum reservoir located at the right front fender apron. If the vacuum line was previously plugged per GFB 8376
(8/19/83), remove the connector and reconnect vacuum line to reservoir. The carburetor calibration eliminates the need for this previous change.

6.

Check/adjust the TV control linkage. See Section 17-25-18 of the Manual.

7.

Check/adjust the curb idle speed. Refer to the Engine Decal.

8.

Road test vehicle from Stop to 55 mph doing light, medium are heavy accelerations for approximately 3 miles to verify fix.

9.

Install a Ford Modification Decal denoting the above changes.

NOTE:

These carburetors are in short supply, and will be until November 9, 1983.

SURGE - MODERATE TO HEAVY ACCELERATION - AMBIENT OVER 95~ F

If surge occurs in ambients over 95~, perform the following steps:

1.

Verify the complaint by performing a road test.

2.

If the processor is a "PA" suffix, change it to an "SA" suffix and road test. If the complaint is still evident, proceed to step 3.

3.

Proceed with a carburetor change, to a "ZE" level using steps 4 through 8 above.

4.

Install a Ford Modification Decal denoting the above changes.
