Constant Velocity Joint: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1.
Remove large boot clamp, roll boot back, and wipe away excess grease.
2.
Remove wire ring bearing retainer from outer race, then remove outer race.
3.
Pull inner race and bearing assembly out until it rests on circlip, then, using pliers, spread stop ring and move it back on shaft.
4.
Slide inner race and bearing assembly down shaft to expose circlip, then remove circlip.
5.
Remove inner race and bearing assembly and, if necessary, remove boot.

Remove large clamp, then slide boot back and wipe excess grease, Fig. 16. Inspect CV joint grease for contamination by rubbing a small
amount between two fingers. Any gritty feeling indicates contamination. If grease is contaminated, proceed with disassembly. If grease is
not contaminated and joint was operating satisfactorily, add grease and replace boot.
2.
Using a suitable tool, remove wire ring ball retainer from race.
3.
Remove outer race.
4.
Pull inner race and bearing assembly out until race contacts snap ring.
5.
Using pliers, spread then slide snap ring back onto shaft.
6.
Slide inner race and bearing assembly down the shaft to allow access to the snap ring.
7.
Using a screwdriver, remove snap ring.
8.
Remove inner race and bearing assembly.

9.
Remove bearings from cage by prying with a dulled screwdriver. Use caution not to damage or scratch any components, Fig. 17.
