Remove belt tension gauge and idle engine for five (5) minutes.

NOTE:

When retensioning a loose belt, it is important not to allow the belt to relax.

With engine off and tension gauge in place, loosen idler slider adjustment bolts and rotate adjusting screw until belt is correctly re-tensioned.
Torque adjustment bolt to specification.

7.

Torque idler slider bolts to 30-40 ft.lbs. (40-55 N-m).

2.3L HSC Alternator Belt

Install cogged "V" alternator belt on pulleys.

NOTE:

Only use E83Z-8620-E or Motorcraft JA- 261-C alternator belt on 1987-88 Tempo/Topaz.

Using adjustable pliers or equivalent, apply tension to belt. Place bottom jaw of pliers under alternator adjustment boss and top jaw in notch at top
of alternator adjustment bracket, Figure 8.

While squeezing pliers together, use a belt tension gauge and set belt to correct tension:

new alternator belt 160 lbs. (712 N), used alternator belt 140 lbs. (623 N).

Secure alternator pivot bolt, leaving it loose enough to allow movement of the alternator. Using adjustable pliers or equivalent, maintain correct
belt tension and torque alternator adjustment bolt to 22-32 ft.lbs. (30-43 N-m).

5.

Remove belt tension gauge and idle engine for five (5) minutes.

NOTE:

When retensioning a loose belt, it is important not to allow the belt to relax.

6.

With engine off, tension gauge in place and tension applied to adjustable pliers so that existing tension on belt is not lost, slowly loosen alternator
adjustment bolt to allow belt tension to increase to used belt specification 140-160 lbs. (623-712 N).

7.

Torque alternator adjustment bolt to 22-32 ft. lbs. (30-43 N-m).
