With engine off, check belt tension. If tension is below 120 lbs. (532 N), re-tension belt. Position the belt tension gauge and apply tension to the
breaker bar so that the existing tension on belt is not lost. Slowly loosen alternator adjustment bolt to allow belt tension to increase to 120-140 lbs.
(532-623 N).

Torque alternator adjustment bolt to 24-34 ft. lbs. (30-46 N-m).

Torque alternator pivot bolt to 45-55 ft.lbs. (61-75 N-m) and support bracket bolt to 15-22 ft.lbs. (20-30 N-m).

1.9L Power Steering

Install V-ribbed power steering belt on pulleys.
2.
Install a 1/2 inch breaker bar to power steering pump adjusting bracket, Figure 5.
3.
Apply tension to belt using breaker bar. Using a belt tension gauge, set belt to correct tension:
new power steering belt 120-160 lbs. (532-712 N), used power steering belt 100-140 lbs. (445-623 N).

Secure power steering pivot bolt, leaving it loose enough to allow power steering bracket to move. While maintaining proper belt tension, torque
power steering adjusting bolts to 30-40 ft.lbs. (40-55 N-m).
5.
Remove belt tension gauge and breaker bar.
6.
Idle engine for five (5) minutes.
NOTE:
When retensioning a loose belt, it is important not to allow the belt to relax.

With engine off, check belt tension. If tension is below 100 lbs., re-tension belt. Position tension gauge in place and apply tension to breaker bar so
that existing tension on belt is not lost. Slowly loosen power steering adjustment bolts and allow belt tension to increase to 100-140 lbs. (445-623
N). Re-torque adjustment belt.
8.
Torque power steering pivot bolt to 45-55 ft. lbs. (61-75 N-m).
