Using a punch, upset serrated portion of upper shaft sufficiently to ensure an interference fit between bearing inner race and steering column upper
shaft.

Place bearing and insulator on steering column upper shaft and work bearing and insulator as far down as possible. Place a piece of pipe (3/4 inch
dia. X 1-1/2 inch long) over end of upper shaft, then install steering wheel nut and tighten nut until bearing is seated firmly on steering shaft.

Remove steering wheel nut and pipe, then install snap ring above bearing and bearing retainer plate.

On all except Ford & Mercury full size, engage safety strap and bolt assembly onto steering gear input shaft, then install two nuts and torque to
20-37 ft. lbs. The safety strap must be properly positioned to prevent metal to metal contact after torquing the nuts. Also, pry steering
shaft up or down with a pry bar to obtain 1/8 inch coupling insulator flatness.
5.
On all models, install trim shrouds and steering wheel, then check steering column for proper operation.
