1.
Look for a blue dot on the rocker arm cover just below the engine code tag at the front of the engine. If a blue dot is present, correction is not
needed because the engine was built without the timing chain damper.

If a blue dot is not found, perform Steps 3 through 9 to remove the timing chain damper.
3.
Remove the engine oil pan.
4.
Remove the #1 main bearing cap to allow for clearance to access the front cover timing chain damper.

Using needle nose pliers, remove the timing chain damper from the engine front cover and throw it away, Figure 7.

Wipe the crank bearing surface, bearing cap and bearing cap mounting surfaces clean. Apply engine oil to all bearing surfaces and bearing cap
bolts.
7.
Install the bearing cap to the block and torque bolts to 58-66 lbs.ft. (70-90 N-m).
8.
Install the oil pan. Refer to the appropriate 1988 Car Shop Manual, Section 21 for service installation details.
