Inspect for a white or yellow paint daub between the two screws on the face of the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) body.

If there is a white or yellow paint daub on the sensor face, the vehicle does not require rework and may be released.

If no white or yellow paint is present, proceed to Step 2.

Loosen the top Throttle Position Sensor screw 1 to no more than 2 turns with a Phillips screwdriver with a 4 to 5 inch long shank. This procedure
(to loosen the top screw before removing the bottom) is required to allow the bottom screw to clear the valve cover during removal. A maximum
of 2 turns prevents the sensor from moving so far out of position that it can disengage from the end of the throttle shaft.

3.

Remove and replace the bottom attaching screw with a new screw (Part No. N603257-S100) and tighten securely. The screwdriver must be against
the top surface of the valve cover and directed at an angle for access to the screw head.

4.

Remove and replace the top attaching screw with the new screw (Part No. N603257-S100) and tighten securely.

SAFETY RECALL 88S40 - 1988 TEMPO/TOPAZ - THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR (TPS) DISENGAGEMENT
Dear Owner:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Ford Motor Company has
determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1988 Tempo and Topaz vehicles.

Safety Defect

The screws that attach the throttle position sensor on your car's engine may loosen and permit the sensor to disengage from the
throttle shaft. This condition may prevent the throttle from returning to idle. This could result in the vehicle not slowing down
in the normal manner after the driver had released the accelerator pedal. It could create the risk of a vehicle crash.

Warning

A driver may be warned of the condition by sluggish engine performance or engine "stumble".

Repairs

At no cost to you, your dealer will inspect your car and, in most cases, will replace the screws that attach the throttle position
sensor on your car. Dealers have instructions for performing the recall service.

How Long Will it Take?

The time needed to repair your car is less than one hour.

You Need To

Call your dealer without delay and ask for a service date. When you bring your car in, give the dealer the attached form.

If you misplace the form, your dealer will still do the work, free of charge.
