Hall Effect Sensor: Service and Repair

Removal
1.
Remove distributor cap and position aside, leaving wires attached.
2.
Disconnect TFI module from harness, then remove distributor from engine block.
3.
Remove rotor, then carefully pry drive coupling spring out with a small screwdriver.
4.
Thoroughly clean drive end of distributor using compressed air.
5.
Mark relationship between drive coupling and shaft for assembly reference.
6.
Secure drive end coupling in a suitable vise. Ensure drive pin aligns with slot in base, then drive pin out of shaft.
7.
Remove distributor and drive coupling from vise.
8.
Remove any burrs from end of shaft using emery cloth, then remove shaft assembly by gently pulling up on the shaft plate.
9.
Remove module-to-base attaching screws and the module. Remove grease from module and base.
10.
Remove octane rod attaching screw and the octane rod.
11.
Remove stator attaching screws and the stator. Retain screws for assembly.
12.
Inspect base bushing for wear or signs of excess heat concentration and the shaft oil seal and base casting for wear. Replace complete distributor
assembly if any damage is noted.
13.
Inspect spring retainer that holds shaft oil seal against shaft and replace if necessary.
14.
Inspect base O-ring and replace if necessary.
Installation
1.
Position stator over bushing and press down until properly seated.
2.
Position stator connector, ensuring tab fits in notch on base and fastening eyelets align with screw holes.
3.
Ensure wires are positioned away from moving components, then install stator screws and torque to 25---35 inch lbs.
4.
Install octane rod and torque attaching screw to 25---35 inch lbs.
5.
Clean module mating surfaces, then apply silicone compound D7AZ-19A331-A or equivalent to back of module.
6.
Invert distributor base and install module, ensuring pins are inserted into stator connector and against base.
7.
Install module attaching screws and torque to 25---35 inch lbs.
8.
Apply a light coat of clean engine oil or synthetic oil to distributor shaft below the armature.
9.
Slide shaft assembly through base bushing.
10.
Position drive coupling over shaft with reference marks aligned, then start pin into drive coupling and shaft.
11.
Secure distributor in a suitable vise and drive pin into shaft until end of pin is flush with step in drive coupling.
12.
Check for free movement of drive coupling on pin and ensure pin does not extend beyond step in coupling in either direction.
13.
Remove distributor from vise and check for free rotation.
14.
Install drive coupling spring in groove on the coupling.
15.
Install distributor, cap and rotor.
16.
Reconnect TFI module connector.
