ISSUE:

A loss of power or no start condition, especially during hot weather, may be caused by the fuel pump/sender assembly.

ACTION:

Use the following diagnostic procedure to determine if a new fuel pump/sender is required.

1.

Perform EEC IV diagnostics to eliminate non-fuel system causes. Refer to the 1988/89 Engine/Emissions Diagnosis Manual, Volume H, for
service details.

2.

Perform fuel pump diagnostics as detailed in the 1988/89 Tempo/Topaz Shop Manual, Section 24-35.

3.

If Steps 2 and 3 do not resolve this concern, then diagnose it by dynamic testing of the vehicle as noted in Step A7 of the fuel pump diagnostics.

a.

Road test the vehicle while monitoring fuel pressure.

b.

If fuel pressure drops below 38 psi while experiencing the loss of power/no start condition, install a new fuel pump/sender
(E93Z-9H307-A).
