ISSUE:

A "growling" noise from the transaxle that gets louder as the vehicle speed is increased may be caused by an incorrect transfer case backlash
setting. The transfer case backlash specification and select gasket procedure published in the 1988 Car Shop Manual, Volume E, Section
16-40 cannot be used on ATX transaxle model PMA-BX through PMABX10. The ATX transaxle can be identified by referring to the model
identification tag located on the main control cover.

ACTION:

If service is required, use the following service procedure to set the transfer case backlash.

NOTE:

THIS PROCEDURE MUST BE FOLLOWED FOR MODEL PMA-BX THROUGH PMA-BX10 ALL WHEEL DRIVE (AWD), ATX
TRANSAXLES.

1.

Remove transfer case and throw away old gasket.

2.

Clean off the used gasket debris from the sealing surfaces and install a new gasket (E83Z-7Z168-A).

3.

Assemble transfer case to ATX and torque all 13 bolts to 12-15 ft.lbs. (16-20 N-m).

4.

Remove cup plug and secure backlash measuring gage through opening.

5.

Proceed to measure backlash as outlined in the Car Shop Manual, Volume E, Section 16-40. Be sure the ATX differential output gear is held tight
against the park pawl while reading the indicator travel.

6.

Backlash specification for ATX model PMA-BX through PMA-BX10 must be within .031 inch (.78 mm) to .066 inch (1.68 mm). Use the
following application chart to select the correct gasket.

If a different gasket is required, repeat Steps 1 through 5 to make sure backlash is within specification.
