Brake Bleeding: Service and Repair
Manual Bleeding
This procedure requires two technicians.
1. Clean all dirt from the brake master cylinder filler cap.
2. Fill the brake master cylinder reservoir to the MAX level with Ford High Performance DOT 3 Brake Fluid C6AZ-19542-AB or DOT-3 equivalent
fluid meeting Ford specification ESA-M6C25-A.
CAUTION:The brake master cylinder reservoir must be at least 3/4 full during the bleeding procedure. Fill the brake master cylinder
reservoir as necessary.
3. If the brake master cylinder is known or suspected to contain air, it must be bled before the rear wheel cylinders or disc brake calipers.
To bleed the brake master cylinder, loosen one brake tube flare nut and have an assistant push the brake pedal slowly through its full travel. While
the assistant holds down the brake pedal, tighten the brake tube flare nut. Repeat this procedure for the other brake tube. Repeat the entire process
several times to ensure all air has been removed from the brake master cylinder.
4. Remove the bleeder screw cap from the appropriate brake.
NOTE: Bleeding must be performed in the following order:
a. Left front brake
b. Right front brake
c. Left rear brake
d. Right rear brake
5. Position a wrench on the bleeder screw.
6. Attach a hose to the bleeder screw. The hose must fit snugly around the bleeder screw.
7. Submerge the free end of the hose in a container partially filled with brake fluid.
8. Loosen the bleeder screw approximately 3/4 of a turn.
9. Have the assistant push the brake pedal slowly through its full travel and hold.
The brake pedal must remain depressed until the bleeder screw is tightened.
10. Tighten the bleeder screw.
11. Have the assistant release the brake pedal.
12. Repeat steps 8-11 until there are no more air bubbles at the submerged end of the bleeder hose.
13. Tighten the caliper bleeder screws to 17-24 Nm (12-17 ft. lbs.). Tighten the wheel cylinder bleeder screws to 7-9 Nm (61-87 inch lbs.).
14. Remove the bleeder hose and install the bleeder screw cap.
15. Repeat these steps at each brake.
16. Check the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir and fill with Ford High Performance DOT 3 Brake Fluid C6AZ- 19542-AB or DOT-3
equivalent fluid meeting Ford specification ESA-M6C25-A if necessary.
17. Check the brake pedal feel. Re-bleed the system or recheck the system.
