Backing Plate: Testing and Inspection
1. Inspect the rivets. The rivets must be tight and securely peened.
2. Inspect the rear brake shoe and lining contact points (where the rear brake shoes and linings rest).
^
Deep grooves in the rear brake shoe and lining contact points could restrict rear brake shoe and lining movement.
^
If grooves exist, hand sand the rear brake shoe and lining contact points.
^
If the grooves are still present after hand sanding, replace the rear brake backing plate. Any attempt to remove the grooves by grinding may
result in improper rear brake shoe and lining-to-brake drum contact.
