Rocker Arm Assembly: Service and Repair
Rocker Arm Shaft

REMOVAL 

1. Remove the front valve cover or the rear valve cover as required.
2. Loosen the rocker arm shaft bolts in two steps.

CAUTION:  Loosening the rocker arm shaft bolts in one step may distort or break the rocker arm shaft.

3. Remove the rocker arm shaft and rocker arm assemblies from the cylinder head.

NOTE: Mark the location of the rocker arms to ease installation.

4. Slide the rocker arms off of the rocker arm shaft.

NOTE:  Label the location of the rocker arms prior to removing them from the rocker arm shaft.

INSTALLATION

1. Slide the rocker arms onto the rocker arm shaft.

NOTE:  Refer to the note/label made during removal to ensure that the rocker arms are installed in their correct position.

2. Install the rocker arm shaft and rocker arm assemblies on the rocker arm shaft support.

3. Install the rocker arm shaft bolts. Tighten the rocker arm shaft bolts in two steps to 18-22 Nm (13-16 ft. lbs.).

CAUTION:  Set camshaft lobes so that valves are not lifted. Tightening the rocker arm shaft bolts with valves lifted can result in damaged valve
components.

4. Install the front valve cover or rear valve cover as required. Tighten the front or rear valve cover screws to 1-3 Nm (9-26 inch lbs.).
