Temperature Gauge: Description and Operation
Analog Instrument Cluster
Description
The instrument cluster coolant gauge is identified by the word TEMP and by a thermometer symbol. H (Hot) indicates high temperature, C (Cold)
indicates low temperature, and NORMAL indicates the temperature range within which the engine should be operating.
Operation
The coolant temperature gauge consists of three primary coils, one of which is wound at a 90 degree angle to the other two. The coils form a magnetic
field which varies in direction according to the variable resistance of the sensor unit which is connected between the two of them. A primary magnet,
to which a shaft and the pointer are attached, rotates to align to this primary field, resulting in pointer movement and position. The bobbin/coil
assembly is pressed into a metal housing which has two holes for dial mounting. This gauge requires no adjustment, calibration, or maintenance.
