Engine Control Module: Reset Procedure

DESCRIPTION

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Reset allows a scan tool to command the PCM to clear all emission-related diagnostic information.

The following events occur when a PCM reset is performed:

-

Clears the number of Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).

-

Clears the DTCs.

-

Clears the freeze frame data.

-

Clears oxygen sensor test data.

-

Resets status of the OBD II system monitors.

PCM RESET 

New Generation STAR (NGS) Tester

1. Key OFF.
2. Perform the necessary vehicle preparation and visual inspection.
3. Select VEHICLE & ENGINE SELECTION menu (OPTIONAL).
4.  Select NEW VEHICLE YEAR & MODEL.
5. Select year, engine, model with the appropriate qualifier, if needed (i.e., transmission, 49 state, California) (OPTIONAL).
6. Follow operating instructions from the menu.
7. Select GENERIC OBD II FUNCTIONS.
8.If all OBD II monitors are NOT complete, press CONT button.
9. Turn key ON.
10. Select CLEAR DIAGNOSTIC CODES.

11. Press START Key.

RESETTING KEEP ALIVE MEMORY (KAM)

Disconnect the negative (-) lead from the battery for 24 hours (this will also result in the PCM Reset described above). Resetting Keep Alive Memory 
(KAM) will also clear learned values the PCM has stored for adaptive systems such as Idle and Fuel. Once the vehicle is driven, the PCM will relearn
new adaptive values. It will take a few miles and the vehicle may run rough until the values are relearned.
