Coolant Temperature Sensor/Switch (For Computer): Description and Operation

Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor

PURPOSE

Detects engine coolant temperature.

LOCATION

Mounted on the top of the intake manifold coolant outlet, in the RH side of the engine compartment.

OPERATION

The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor constantly updates the PCM with an input signal, which the PCM uses to modify the ignition
timing, the idle speed, the cooling fan operation, the EGR flow, and the air/fuel ratio.

CONSTRUCTION

The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor has a thermistor which senses temperature changes. Thermistor resistance decreases as the
temperature rises.
