12. Install the five rear power steering pump housing bolts. Tighten the five rear power steering pump housing bolts to 31-42 Nm (23-31 ft. lbs.).
13. Install the power steering pump flow control valve spring and power steering pump valve.
14. Install the power steering pressure hose connection washers, the power steering pressure hose connection and the power steering pressure hose
connection bolt. Tighten the power steering pressure hose connection bolt to 69-78 Nm (51-58 ft. lbs.).
15. Install the power steering pump. See: Removal and Installation
Fill Procedure
INITIAL FILL
1. Disconnect the ignition coil to distributor high tension wiring.
2. Fill the power steering oil reservoir to the MAX mark.
3. Raise and support the front wheels.
4. Crank the engine with the starter motor. Add fluid to the power steering oil reservoir until the level remains constant.
5. While cranking the engine, turn the steering wheel from stop to stop. Check the fluid level and add fluid if necessary.
CAUTION: Do not hold the steering wheel against a stop for more than 15 seconds at a time.
6. Connect the ignition coil to distributor high tension wiring.
FINAL FILL
1. Start the engine and allow it to idle for several minutes.
2. Turn the steering wheel from stop to stop several times.
CAUTION: Do not hold the steering wheel against a stop for more than 15 seconds at a time.
3. Turn off the engine and check the fluid level. Add fluid as necessary.
4. Lower the vehicle.
Flushing
When contamination is noted while overhauling the steering gear, it will be necessary to flush the power steering pump.
1. Leave all hoses connected, except the power steering pressure hose at the steering gear.
2. Place the power steering pressure hose in a suitable container.
3. Fill the power steering oil reservoir with MERCON Power Steering Fluid.
4. Disconnect the ICM connector to prevent the engine from starting.
5. While approximately two quarts of the power steering gear fluid are being poured into the power steering fluid reservoir, engage the starter motor.
6. As soon as all the fluid has been poured in, turn off the ignition switch.
7. Attach the power steering pressure hose at the steering gear.
8. Check the fluid level.
9. Crank the engine with the starter motor and continue adding fluid until the level remains constant. Connect the ICM connector.
10. Start the engine and cycle the steering wheel from stop to stop to expel any air from the system.
