Suspension Strut / Shock Absorber: Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview
Shock Inspection
VEHICLE INSPECTION
Visually inspect each component of the shock absorber and replace worn or damaged parts as necessary.
To check the condition of shock absorber, quickly bounce each corner of the vehicle and release at the bottom of the down-stroke. Shocks in good
condition will allow one "free" bounce after the vehicle is released.
HOIST CHECK
Lift the vehicle on a suitable hoist, inspect the front and rear shock absorbers for signs of leakage. A thin oily film is normal. Make sure that the fluid
is not from sources other than the shock absorber. Check for looseness in the shock absorber mounting bushings in the underbody or suspension lower
arms. If any play is apparent, replace the bushings involved.
BENCH TEST
Inspect the shock absorbers for evidence of oil leakage. A thin film is normal. Make sure that the fluid is not from sources other than the shock
absorbers. Cycle the shock absorber piston rods up and down to check for proper fluid resistance. If any of the shock absorbers fail the above text,
replace the shock absorber(s) in question.
Strut Inspection
1. Check the condition of the front shock absorber and front spring insulator. If damaged or deteriorated, replace with new parts.
2. Check the front coil spring for uniform coil spacing and freedom from nicks or kinks. If in doubt, release the spring compressor progressively and
compare the front coil spring free length with a new front coil spring to check for excessive front coil spring set.
