Wheel Bearing: Testing and Inspection
Front
Front wheel bearings that need to be replaced will be indicated by abnormal noise. Noise will occur if the front wheel bearing(s) are worn, dirty, or dry.
The front wheel bearings are sealed and cannot be cleaned or greased. Front wheel bearings can be diagnosed by performing the following tests.
1. Road test the vehicle on a smooth road. Make sharp turns to the right and left.

If the vehicle makes noises on right turns, the left front wheel bearing may need to be replaced.

If the vehicle makes noises on left turns, the right front wheel bearing may need to be replaced.

If front wheel bearing noise is heard on either right or left turns, the front wheel knuckle/wheel assembly on the suspected side should be
disassembled and inspected.
NOTE: Be careful not to confuse front suspension lower arm ball joint looseness with front wheel bearing looseness.
2. Raise the front of the vehicle and check for loose front wheel bearings by rocking the tires at top and bottom.
3. Spin the tire quickly by hand and make sure the tire turns smoothly without noise from the front wheel bearings.
If abnormal looseness or noise is found, replace the front wheel bearings.
