On all models except Escort, EXP, Lynx, LN7, Tempo and Topaz, install upper pinion bearing, shims, spacer, gasket, pinion cover and pinion
cover attaching bolts. Torque pinion cover attaching bolts to 15---20 ft. lbs. If bearing preload is in need of adjustment or a new shim pack is to be
installed, refer to Pinion Bearing Preload Adjustment procedure. On Escort, EXP, Lynx, LN7, Tempo and Topaz models, install upper pinion
bearing, turn pinion shaft from lock to lock, counting the necessary amount of complete turns. Starting from either full lock position turn pinion
shaft back exactly half the number of turns lock to lock, The flat on the input shaft must be at the 3 o'clock position as viewed from the driver's
position. If not, adjust pinion position. Install shims, spacer, gasket, pinion cover and pinion bolts. Using centering tool No. T81P-3504-Y, center
pinion cover and torque bolts to 12---18 ft. lbs., and install new pinion seal in cover, Fig. 3. If bearing preload is in need of adjustment or a new
shim pack is to be installed, refer to ``Pinion Bearing Preload Adjustment'' procedure.

On 1982---83 Fairmont, Zephyr, 1982---85 Capri, Mustang, 1984---85 Mustang SVO, 1982 Cougar, Granada, 1983 LTD, Marquis, 1982---85
Escort, EXP, Lynx, LN7, and 1984---85 Tempo and Topaz, install right side ball housing/tie rod assembly on end of rack.

Install support yoke, spring, shims, gasket, yoke cover and yoke cover attaching bolts. Torque attaching bolts to 15---20 ft. lbs. for all models
except Escort, EXP, Lynx, LN7, Tempo and Topaz. On Escort, EXP, Lynx, LN7, Tempo and Topaz models, torque bolts to 5---8 ft. lbs. Adjust
yoke preload as described under ``Support Yoke to Rack Adjustment.''
Rack Support Yoke, Spring, Gasket, Shims & Cover
Disassembly
1.
Clean exterior of steering gear.
2.
Place steering gear in a soft jawed vise with yoke cover up.
3.
Remove yoke cover, shims, gasket and yoke spring.
4.
Discard gasket.
Assembly
1.
Clean cover and cover flange areas.
2.
Assemble yoke and spring.
3.
Install a new gasket. If yoke to rack spring tension adjustment is needed or new shims are to be installed, refer to ``Support Yoke To Rack.''
4.
Install shim pack and cover.
5.
Apply a suitable sealant to cover bolt threads, then torque bolts to 15---20 ft. lbs. except 1982---85 Escort, EXP, Lynx and LN7, and 1984---85
Tempo and Topaz. For Escort, EXP, Lynx, LN7, Tempo and Topaz, torque bolts to 5---8 ft. lbs.
