Differential Axle Housing: Service and Repair
1.
Raise rear of vehicle support at frame members and rear axle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
2.
Remove brake drums and disconnect brake lines at wheel cylinders.
3.
Make marks on drive shaft yoke and pinion flange for reassembly, then disconnect drive shaft at rear U-joint and remove drive shaft from
transmission extension housing. Install seal replacer tool in extension housing to prevent leakage.
4.
Position a drain pan under differential carrier, then remove carrier attaching bolts and allow differential to drain.
5.
Disconnect stabilizer bar, if equipped.
6.
Disconnect shock absorbers from lower mountings.
7.
Remove brake lines from retaining clips on rear axle housing, then remove brake line junction block retaining screw.
8.
Position a suitable jack under axle housing to prevent housing from tilting when removing control arms.
9.
Disconnect lower control arms from axle housing and position control arms downward.
10.
Disconnect upper control arms from axle housing and position control arms upward.
11.
Disconnect air vent line.
12.
Lower axle slightly and remove coil springs and insulators.
13.
Lower axle housing and remove from vehicle.
