Wiper Gear Box: Service and Repair
1.
On 1983-88 Cougar and Thunderbird models, operate wipers and turn ignition key off when blades are straight up on windshield.
2.
On all models, disconnect battery ground cable.
3.
On all models except 1983-88 Cougar and Thunderbird, remove both wiper arm and blade assemblies.
4.
On 1983-88 Cougar and Thunderbird models, remove right wiper arm and blade assembly.
5.
On all models, remove cowl grille or left trash screen attaching screws then the cowl grille or screen.
6.
Remove retaining clip, then disconnect linkage drive arm from wiper motor crankpin.
7.
On Fairmont, Granada, Zephyr and 1982 Cougar models, remove 4 bolts attaching left and right pivot shafts to cowl, then remove linkage
assembly.
8.
On Cougar XR-7, Thunderbird and 1983-86 LTD and Marquis models, remove 2 bolts attaching right pivot shaft to cowl, then remove nut, washer
and spacer from left pivot shaft and remove linkage assembly.
9.
On 1983-88 Cougar and Thunderbird models, remove pivot shaft attaching screws, then remove linkage assembly out through cowl chamber.
10.
Reverse procedure to install.
