GALANT AND ECLIPSE PAINT SPOTTING
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Some vehicles may exhibit a clear coat whitening (paint spotting) condition. This condition is the result of a chemical reaction between the clear coat and
a paint formula additive that was used for a limited time in production. The only effective way to repair this condition is to repaint the vehicle as
described in the SERVICE PROCEDURE section of this bulletin.
VEHICLES AFFECTED
Some 1995 Galant and Eclipse models with paint color Kalapana Black, Everett Green, Metallic and Barcelona Red Pearl produced between 6/94 and
2/9/95:

Vehicles produced after 2/9/95 are not affected and do not require paint repair.
^
Vehicles produced before 2/9/95 in MMSA inventory with the paint spotting condition will be repainted prior to shipment to dealers.
Dealer Inventory
^
Affected vehicles in dealer stock produced before 2/9/95 which do not exhibit this condition are identified by a green sticker affixed inside the
vehicle on the upper left (driver's side) corner of the windshield.
^
You will receive a VIN list of affected vehicles shipped to dealers that MMSA shows as not yet retailed, which must be repainted prior to sale.
Notify your District Service Manager (DSM) if the VIN list does not agree with your vehicle inventory.
Customer Vehicles
^
DSM approval is required for all customer vehicles brought in to repair this condition. A rental or loaner vehicle may be provided to the customer for
up to five days.
^
Any affected used vehicle which is purchased by your dealership must be repainted prior to resale.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1.
Inspect the vehicle (or check VIN list) to determine if the finish quality of any body panel is affected by the clear coat whitening (paint spotting)
condition.
2.
Customer vehicles only: Inform your District Service Manager (DSM) of the vehicle's paint finish condition. Your DSM will determine whether
the vehicle should be repainted.
IMPORTANT:
All customer vehicles must be inspected by your DSM prior to performing repairs.
3.
Send the vehicle to the body shop of your choice. Instruct the body shop to repaint the affected panels as described in the Paint Repair Procedure
below. Refer to TSB-94-51-001 for paint color code information.
Paint Repair Procedure
1.
Remove all necessary trim parts, such as emblems, decals, pin-striping, etc.
2.
Clean the exterior with mild soap and water to remove all water-soluble contaminants.
3.
Apply a wax and grease remover, such as PPG DX330 ACRYLICLEAN, PPG DX380 low VOC, or equivalent. Follow the manufacturer's
instructions for use.
4.
Thoroughly sand the affected panels with 600 grit wet or dry sandpaper. Remove approximately 50% of the clearcoat.
