SUBJECT:
TICKING NOISE AT IDLE/DTC 46/INCREASED THROTTLE EFFORT
PURPOSE
On some affected vehicles, while the engine is idling, one or more of the following conditions may occur:
^
At ambient temperatures below 40° F, a ticking noise comes from the engine compartment at the evaporative emission purge solenoid.
^
At ambient temperatures below 32° F the CHECK ENGINE light comes on and Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 46 "EGR System Failure" is set.
^
At ambient temperatures below 20° F, after a cold start the engine stops during idle.
^
More throttle effort than normal is required to accelerate the vehicle from the idle position.
After diagnosis, the following repairs may be required to eliminate the above conditions. Follow the diagnosis and repair information in the
PROCEDURE section of this bulletin.

For vehicles with certain PCM part numbers, reprogram the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to change the temperature parameters for the duty
cycle of the evaporative emission purge solenoid and the EGR valve.
^
For vehicles with certain other PCM part numbers, replace the PCM.
^
Some vehicles may also require emission purge solenoid replacement.
