BRAKE SWITCH ADJUSTMENT

PURPOSE

Premature brake pad wear may be caused by incorrect brake switch adjustment, eventually resulting in a grinding or scraping noise during braking. This
bulletin describes the procedure for adjusting the brake switch on affected vehicles.

VEHICLES AFFECTED

1995 Eclipse and Galant models produced before June 12, 1995.

PROCEDURE

1.

Measure the distance between the brake switch outer case and the pedal stopper. Specification is 0.5 - 1.0 mm (0.02 - 0.04 in.).

a.

If not within specification, go to Step 2.

b.

If within specification, confirm that the clearance between the brake booster push rod and the primary piston is correct. This clearance
specification is 0.65 - 0.85 mm (0.025 - 0.033 in.) for Eclipse and 0.60 - 0.80 mm (0.024 - 0.031 in.) for Galant.

NOTE:

The Eclipse service manual specification for the clearance between the brake booster push rod and primary piston was corrected in
TSB-95-35-002, issued in May, 1995.

2.

Disconnect the stop light switch connector and loosen the lock nut.

3.

Move the switch as necessary to obtain 0.5 - 1.0 mm (0.02 - 0.04 in.) clearance between the brake switch outer case and the pedal stopper.

4.

Tighten the locking nut. Be sure the clearance is not changed after tightening.

5.

Reconnect the stop light switch connector.

6.

Ensure that the stop light does not stay on when the brake pedal is released. Repeat the above procedure if necessary.
