Test drive the vehicle on a smooth road surface.
a.
If the vehicle shudders during the 1-2 upshifts with light to moderate throttle application, continue with Step 3.
b.
If there is no 1-2 upshift shudder, STOP. Do not continue with this procedure.
3.
Remove and inspect the transaxle oil pan.
a.
If there is excessive clutch friction material in the bottom of the pan, proceed with Steps 4 through 14.
b.
If no clutch friction material is found in the bottom of the pan, perform only Steps 4 through 8 and 10 through 14. Skip Step 9 of this
bulletin.

Remove the transaxle assembly from the vehicle as described in Section 23 of the appropriate Eclipse service manual.
CAUTION
Automatic transaxle parts must be handled carefully to avoid scratching or other damage. Also use care to prevent dirt or lint contamination.
5.
Disassemble the transaxle as described in Section 23G of the 1992-96 Automatic Transmission Overhaul service manual.
6.
Inspect the 24 accumulator piston. If it is made of plastic material, replace it with an aluminum piston listed in the PARTS INFORMATION
section of this bulletin.
7.
Replace the 24 clutch plates and discs, using parts listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin. Be sure to alternate the plates as
shown, so that the pilot pads of adjacent plates are not aligned.
8.
During reassembly, be sure to check and adjust all clutch clearances as necessary.
NOTE:
Low/Reverse clutch clearance specification for this condition is 0.89 - 1.04 mm (0.035 - 0.042 in.).
9.
If excessive clutch friction material was found in the bottom of the transaxle oil pan, reverse flush the oil cooler and cooler lines. Verify that the
fluid flows freely without obstructions.
CAUTION
Do not re-use any of the seals originally installed in the transaxle. Install new seals.
