Brake Bleeding: Service and Repair

CAUTION:  

-

Use DOT3 or DOT4 brake fluid. Don't use a mixture of the specified brake fluid and another non-specified fluid.

For vehicles with ABS, be sure to filter/strain the brake fluid being added to the master cylinder reservoir tank. Debris may damage the hydraulic
unit.

MASTER CYLINDER BLEEDING

Bleeding Master Cylinder

The master cylinder has no check valve, so if bleeding is carried out by the following procedure, bleeding of air from the brake line will become
easier.
a. Fill the reserve tank with brake fluid.
b. Keep the brake pedal depressed.
c. Have another person cover the master cylinder outlet with a finger.
d. With the outlet still closed, release the brake pedal.
e. Repeat steps b through d three or four times. Ensure that the master cylinder has an adequate amount of brake fluid at all times.

BRAKE LINE BLEEDING

1. Start the engine and bleed the air in the sequence shown in the figure.
2. Pump the brake pedal 3 - 4 times. With the pedal depressed have a helper momentarily open the first bleeder screw. Do not release the brake pedal

until the bleeder screw is tightened.

3. Repeat 2 - 3 times and move on to the next bleeder screw in the illustration.
4. Repeat until all air is purged from the hydraulic system.
