Battery: Service Precautions
Air Bag Arming & Disarming

PRECAUTION:  It is necessary to disarm the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) prior to servicing any systems or components that may
cause an air bag to deploy unexpectedly. Failure to do so may result in serious injury and vehicle damage. Refer to "Air Bag System Disarming
& Arming" at bottom for procedures.

1. Do not use any electrical test equipment on or near SRS components, except those specified in procedures.
2. Never use analog ohmmeters or other powered test instruments on air bag units.
3. Do not disconnect any SRS components, fuses or connectors until battery ground cable has been disconnected for at least 60 seconds to

avoid storing false diagnostic trouble codes in the SRS Electronic Control Unit (ECU).

4. Always replace clockspring when replacing a deployed air bag module.
5. Never attempt to repair following components:

a. Front impact sensors.
b. SRS Diagnosis Unit (SDU).
c. Clockspring.
d. Air bag module.
e. If any of these components are diagnosed as faulty, they should be replaced.

6. Do not attempt to repair SRS wiring harness connectors. Replace harness if any connectors are diagnosed as faulty. If wires are diagnosed as

faulty, replace or repair harness according to tables shown in Fig. 4.

7. After disconnecting battery cable, wait 60 seconds or more before beginning repair procedures.
8. SRS components should not be subjected to heat over 200°F. Remove front impact sensors, SRS diagnosis unit, air bag module and clockspring

before drying or baking vehicle after painting.

9. Do not paint air bag to correct cosmetic flaws. Replacement is necessary to correct such flaws.

10. Inspect SRS warning lamp operation to ensure system is functioning properly when service is complete.

ARMING

1. Ensure no one is inside vehicle.
2. Connect battery ground cable and start engine.
3. Ensure SRS warning lamp lights for approximately seven seconds, then goes off and remains off for at least 45 seconds.
4. If lamp operates as described, SRS is functioning properly.
5. If lamp does not operate as described, an SRS malfunction is indicated. Diagnose and repair as necessary.
