1.
Release fuel system pressure as outlined under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELIEF.
2.
Disconnect battery ground cable.
3.
Remove timing belt as outlined under TIMING BELT ASSEMBLY.
4.
Remove components in numbered sequence shown in Fig. 26, noting the following:
a. Remove oil pan by driving oil pan remover tool around pan.
b. Remove plug on side of cylinder block and insert a screwdriver into hole to prevent silent shaft from turning.
c. Loosen oil pump sprocket flange nut.
d. With silent shaft locked, remove flange bolt.
INSPECTION
1.
Check gear contacting surface of front case and oil pump cover for step wear. If wear is evident, replace front case.
2.
Check silent shaft journals for wear and damage. If excessive damage or wear is evident, check bearing. If necessary, replace silent shaft and/or
bearing.
3.
Inspect oil pump as follows:
a. Assemble oil pump gear in front case and rotate gear to ensure smooth rotation with no looseness.
b. Ensure no ridge wear exists on contact surface between front case and gear surface of oil pump cover.
c. Ensure side clearance is .0031-.0055 inch for the drive gear and .0024-.0047 inch for the driven gear.
