Power Steering Pump: Testing and Inspection
The following procedures require the following special tools to complete. An oil pressure gauge assembly tool No. MB990662-01, a power steering
oil pressure gauge pump side adapter tool No. MB990993-01 and a power steering oil pressure gauge hose side adapter tool No. MB990994-01.

Checking Oil Pump Relief Pressure
1.
Disconnect pressure hose from oil pump then connect special tools as shown, Fig. 1.
2.
Bleed air from system as outlined under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/BLEEDING SYSTEM, then turn steering wheel from stop to stop
until fluid temperature in reservoir is 122-140°F.
3.
Start engine and allow to idle at 900-1100 RPM.
4.
Fully close shutoff valve and ensure oil pump relief pressure is as specified in SPECIFICATIONS/PRESSURES, VACUUM, AND
TEMPERATURE SPECIFICATIONS/POWER STEERING PRESSURE SPECIFICATIONS. Do not leave shutoff valve closed for more
than 10 seconds as damage or injury may occur.
5.
If pressure is not within specification, service oil pump as outlined under COMPONENT REPLACEMENT AND REPAIR PROCEDURES/
POWER STEERING PUMP.
6.
Remove special tools and bleed system.
Checking Pressure Under No Load Conditions
1.
Disconnect pressure hose from oil pump then connect special tools as shown, Fig. 1.
2.
Bleed air from system as outlined under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/BLEEDING SYSTEM, then turn steering wheel from stop to stop
until fluid temperature in reservoir is 122-140°F.
3.
Start engine and allow to idle at 900-1100 RPM.
4.
Check hydraulic pressure and ensure it is as specified in SPECIFICATIONS/PRESSURES, VACUUM, AND TEMPERATURE
SPECIFICATIONS/POWER STEERING PRESSURE SPECIFICATIONS.
5.
If pressure is not within specification, probable cause may be a clogged pressure line or faulty steering gearbox. Check and repair as necessary.
6.
Remove special tools and bleed system.
Checking Steering Gear Retention Hydraulic Pressure
1.
Disconnect pressure hose from oil pump then connect special tools as shown, Fig. 1.
2.
Bleed air from system as outlined under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/BLEEDING SYSTEM, then turn steering wheel from stop to stop
until fluid temperature in reservoir is 122-140°F.
3.
Start engine and allow to idle at 900-1100 RPM.
4.
Fully close then fully open shutoff valve.
5.
Turn steering wheel from stop to stop, then ensure retention pressure is as specified in SPECIFICATIONS/PRESSURES, VACUUM, AND
TEMPERATURE SPECIFICATIONS/POWER STEERING PRESSURE SPECIFICATIONS.
6.
If pressure is not as specified, service steering gearbox.
7.
Repeat steps 4 and 5.
8.
Remove special tools and bleed system.
