Idle Speed/Throttle Actuator - Electronic: Testing and Inspection

Idle Air Control (IAC) Circuit

Engine Control Module Connector--For Pin Applications See Components

TIPS: 

While the engine is idling, if the idle speed and IAC valve position--step--change when the air conditioning switch is turned ON and OFF;
-

It can be assumed that the idle air control motor and the IAC valve position sensor are operating normally.

If the IAC valve position--step--is outside the standard position, the malfunction is probably one of the following;
-

Basic idle adjustment is wrong.

-

There are deposits on the throttle valve.

-

There is an intake vacuum leak--gasket or seal defective.

-

EGR valve sheet adhesion is defective.

-

Combustion malfunction inside a cylinder or cylinders; spark plug, coil, injector, or engine compression.

COMPONENT TEST 

Verify motor operation by listening for motor actuation immediately after the ignition is turned ON.

HARNESS TEST 

1. With the ECM connector and the IAC motor connector both disconnected, check for continuity in the harness.
2. With the ECM connector and the IAC motor connector both disconnected, check for harness shorted to ground.

If any of the previous tests produce unsatisfactory results, the harness will need to be repaired or replaced. Once repairs have been completed, road
test the vehicle to confirm that the repair has corrected the problem.
If the same problem reoccurs, it is possible that there is an intermittent failure of the component or the ECU. Check for looseness at all harness
junctions and test for an intermittent failure.
