Oxygen Sensor: Testing and Inspection

Oxygen Sensor Circuit

Tip:

The exhaust gas purification performance will worsen if there is a malfunction of the oxygen sensor.

If the oxygen sensor output Voltage deviates from the standard value, even though the results of the checking of the oxygen sensor are normal, the
cause is probably a malfunction of a component related to mixture control;

Malfunction of an injector

-

Air leakage into the intake manifold through a leaking gasket.

Malfunction of the volume air flow sensor, the barometric pressure sensor, or the engine coolant temperature sensor.

COMPONENT TEST

1. Start and warm the engine until the coolant temperature is between 185 and 203° F (85 and 95° C).
2. Carefully disconnect the oxygen sensor connector and connect a Volt meter--with at least 10 megaohm resistance--to the #1 terminal at the sensor.
3. Race engine repeatedly and measure the oxygen sensor output Voltage.

Output Voltage should be 0.6 to 1.0 Volts while racing the engine.

4. Faulty results in the above test may be caused by:

a. Engine mechanical problems
b. Open or shorted wiring harness
c. Fuel pressure
d. Fuel mixture
e. Low engine operating temperature

5. Perform all tests before replacing the sensor.
