Galant L4-1997cc 2.0L SOHC 16 Valve (1993)
1. Disassemble power steering gear in numbered sequence shown in Fig. 17, noting the following:
a. Tie rod and rack retaining tab must be unstaked with a chisel.
b. Tool No. MB991204, or equivalent, may be used to remove rack support cover from gearbox.
c. When removing pinion, gently tap with a plastic hammer.
d. When removing oil seal from rack bushing, do not damage oil seal press fitting surface.
e. Remove ball bearing from gear housing using a brass bar.
f.
Remove needle roller bearing from rack housing using special tool No.MB991120, or equivalent.
g. When removing back-up washer and oil seal from gear housing, do not damage inner surface of gear housing rack cylinder.
2. Inspect rack tooth surfaces for damage or wear, then check oil seal contact surfaces for uneven wear.
3. Inspect rack for bends.
4. Check pinion gear tooth surfaces for damage or wear, then check for worn or defective seals.
5. Check bearing for roughness, abnormal noise and excessive play during operation.
6. Check needle roller bearings for roller slip-off.
7. Check rack housing cylinder inner surface for damage.
8. Check mounting rubber for cracks or damage. Replace as required.
9. Reverse numbered sequence shown in Fig. 17 to assemble, noting the following:
a. When installing back-up washer and oil seal, coat seal with Dexron II or Diamond ATF SP ATF, then press back-up and oil seal into rack
housing to specified position.
b. When installing needle roller bearing, apply even pressure to prevent housing damage.
c. Apply coating of multipurpose grease to rack tooth face.
d. When installing rack assembly, cover rack serrations with tool No. MB991213, or equivalent, then match oil seal center with rack to prevent
retainer spring from slipping and slowly insert rack from power cylinder side.
e. When installing rack bushing and stopper, wrap rack end with vinyl tape and apply a coating of Dexron II or Diamond ATF SP ATF.
f.
Install seal rings using tool No. MB991317, or equivalent.
g. When installing end plug, secure threaded portion at two points using a punch.
h. Adjust total pinion torque to 5-11 inch lbs.
i.
When installing tie rod, fold tab washer end into tie rod notch.
j.
Pack dust cover interior with multipurpose grease.
