POOR IDLE QUALITY

PURPOSE

For 2004 Galant MIVEC models with VINs after 4E107228 (Federal emissions) or 4E108924 (California emissions), idle quality can be improved by
only adjusting the valve clearances as described in TSB-04-11-004. Camshaft replacement and PCM reprogramming will not improve idle quality on
vehicles with VINs after 4E107228 (Federal emissions) or 4E108924 (California emissions).

On affected vehicles (VINs before 4E107228 (Federal emissions) or 4E108924 (California emissions) that exhibit poor idle quality, idle quality can be
improved by performing all of the following three repairs:

Install a new, improved camshaft listed in this bulletin.

Adjust the valve clearances as described in this bulletin.

^

Reprogram the PCM as described in TSB-04-13-010.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

2004 Galant models equipped with 4G69 2.4L MIVEC engine before the following VINs:

-

VIN 4E107228 (Federal emissions)

-

VIN 4E108924 (California emissions)

PROCEDURE

1.

Inspect the rear of the cylinder head for a punch mark with white paint.

a.

If there is NO punch mark with white paint, go to Step 2 for camshaft replacement.

b.

If there is a punch mark with white paint, go to Step 3 for valve clearance adjustment.
