PURPOSE This bulletin presents a revised procedure for adjusting the rear wheel bearings on the 1985 and 1986 Galant. As reference to this bulletin,
please write the STB number in the revision boxes on Pages 17-6 of the 1985 and 1986 Galant Service Manuals.
This revised procedure is important in insuring that rear wheel bearings are properly adjusted to minimize noise and vibration and to prolong bearing
life.

ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE
1.
With the wheel, hubcap, and cotter pin removed, tighten the lock nut to 20 N-m (15 ft.lb).
NOTE:
Inspect the lock nut for thread damage that would give a false torque reading. If damaged, replace the nut.
2.
Turn the wheel one-half turn or more back and forth several times to be sure the bearing is seated. (Fig. 1)
3.
Loosen the lock nut; then tighten it finger-tight. Next, tighten the nut to 10 N-m (90 in.lb).
4.
Repeat Step 2.
5.
Re-tighten the lock nut to 10 N-m (90 in. lb).

With a spring scale, measure the force (torque) to turn the wheel. See Fig. 2
