Radiator Cooling Fan Temperature Sensor / Switch: Testing and Inspection
Diagnosis
Fig. 1 Testing single terminal sensor
1.
On vehicles equipped with single terminal sensor, proceed as follows:
a. Heat sensor by holding it under water as shown in Fig. 1, then connect suitable tester.
b. On 1984-86 Galant, Precis, and 1984-88 Cordia and Tredia, resistance should be 104 ohms at 158° F or 38 ohms at 212° F.
c. On 1987-88 Galant, continuity should exist at approximately 180-190°F, but should not exist at approximately 172-180°F.
d. If resistance is not as specified, replace sensor.
Fig. 2 Testing double terminal sensor
2.
On vehicle equipped with double terminal sensor, proceed as follows:
a. Heat sensor by holding it under water as shown in Fig. 2, then connect suitable tester to terminal A. Resistance should be 104 ohms with
water at 158° F or 38 ohms with water temperature at 212° F.
b. Connect tester to terminal B and body. Continuity should be present above 122° F.
c. If any of the above steps are not as specified, replace sensor.
