Wheel Hub: Service and Repair

Replace

1.

Raise and support vehicle, then remove front wheels.

2.

Disconnect brake caliper assembly and support using suitable wire.

3.

Disconnect lower control arm ball joint from knuckle using a suitable tool.

4.

Remove stabilizer bar from lower control arm.

5.

Disconnect tie rod end from knuckle using a suitable tool.

6.

Remove drive shaft from hub.

7.

Remove hub and knuckle as an assembly from strut assembly.

8.

Reverse procedure to install.

Service

1.

Attach tools MB990998-01 and MB991056 or equivalent to knuckle and hub, then secure knuckle in vise.

2.

Remove hub from knuckle by tightening nut of tool.

3.

Remove outside bearing inner race from hub using tool MB990810-01 or equivalent.

4.

Remove hub side oil seal from hub.

5.

Remove brake disc from hub.

6.

Remove driveshaft side oil seal from knuckle.

7.

Remove snap ring from knuckle, then the wheel bearing using a suitable tool.

8.

Pack wheel bearing with suitable grease.

9.

Apply a thin coating of grease to knuckle and bearing contact surfaces.

10.

With inside wheel bearing inner race removed, press in bearing using a suitable tool.

11.

Install wheel bearing inner race to wheel bearing, then attach snap ring.

12.

Drive hub side oil seal into knuckle using a suitable tool until it is flush with knuckle end surface.

13.

Apply grease to lip of oil seal and surfaces of oil seal which contact hub.

14.

Mount hub onto knuckle using tool MB990998-01 or equivalent. Torque nut of tool to 145-187 ft. lbs.

15.

Rotate hub to seat bearing, then check hub turning torque. Turning torque should be 16 inch lbs. or less.

16.

Mount knuckle in vise, then check hub endplay using a suitable dial gauge. Endplay should be .008 inch.

17.

If turning torque and hub endplay are not as specified, hub and/or knuckle may have been installed incorrectly. Repeat service procedures.

18.

Apply grease to bearing and inside of knuckle, then drive driveshaft side oil seal into knuckle until it contacts snap ring.

19.

Apply grease to lip of oil seal.
