Tie Rod End: Testing and Inspection
TIE ROD END BALL JOINT BREAKAWAY TORQUE CHECK
Required Special Tools:
MB990326: Preload Socket
MB991113 or MB990635: Steering Linkage Puller
WARNING: Support special tools MB991113 or MB990635 with a cord, etc. to prevent it from coming off.
1. Use special tool MB991113 or MB990635 to disconnect the ball joint.
NOTE: Only loosen the mounting nut, do not remove it from the ball joint.
2. Move the ball joint stud several times and install the nut on the stud. Measure the ball joint breakaway torque with special tool M13990326.
Standard value: 0.5 - 2.5 Nm (4.4 - 22.1 inch lbs.)
3. If the breakaway torque exceeds the standard value, replace the tie rod end.
4. If the breakaway torque is under the standard value, check the ball joint for end play or ratcheting. If no end play or ratcheting, the ball joint can be
re-used.
5. Tighten the nut to the specified torque and install a new cotter pin.
Tightening torque: 24 - 33 Nm (17 - 25 ft. lbs.)
