Fuel Gauge - Will Not Display Full Tank

FUEL GAUGE NOT READING FULL

PURPOSE

This bulletin contains procedures for correcting a condition where the fuel gauge on some early production 1999 Galants may not read full when the tank
is filled.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Symptom

Affected vehicles will exhibit a condition where the fuel gauge will indicate less than a full tank, even though the tank is completely full.

Cause

The shape of the fuel tank in 1999 model year Galants built prior to 9/1/98 may prevent the fuel gauge from reading full, even when tank is completely
filled with fuel. The shape was modified on Galants built after 9/1/98 to prevent this condition.

Remedy

Correcting the described condition involves the following repair steps:

Removal of the fuel pump sending unit assembly from the tank.

^

Replacing the float arm on the fuel gauge sending unit with a new shorter one.

^

Testing the sending unit electrically for full range.

^

Installing the fuel pump assembly into the fuel tank.

^

Inspecting the fuel pump gasket for leaks after assembly.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

1999 Galant built before September 1, 1998

PROCEDURE

This is a relatively simple part replacement procedure, but CARE MUST BE TAKEN to prevent damage to the resistor card on the sending unit and to
ensure the fuel pump gasket does not leak after the repair is completed.

Remove the fuel pump sending unit from the fuel tank following the instructions in section 13C of the 1999 Galant Service Manual.

NOTE:

For proper reinstallation of the sending unit, most vehicles have mating-marks on the fuel tank and the fuel pump sending unit. However, some very
early production vehicles may not have the mating-marks If you encounter a vehicle without these marks, use chalk or a felt marker and make
corresponding mating-marks on the tank and fuel pump sending unit. Using these marks when reinstalling the sending unit will assure proper
positioning and operation of the fuel gauge.

! WARNING

DO NOT remove the fuel pump sending unit assembly if the fuel tank is full. Fuel will spill into the interior of the vehicle. For best results, the fuel
tank should be less the 3/4 full when removing the fuel pump unit.
