SUBJECT:
EXHAUST VALVE LEAKAGE CAUSING ROUGH IDLE (4G15 ENGINE)
PURPOSE
This bulletin has procedures for diagnosing and repairing a rough idle condition caused by leaking exhaust valves, which may occur on 1989-98 Mirage
vehicles equipped with the 1.5L (4G15) engine.
The leaking exhaust valve causes low compression which creates rough idling.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Symptom
Affected vehicles may exhibit a rough idle condition
Cause
The rough idling may be attributed to low compression caused by poor sealing of the exhaust valves due to excessive wear of the valve guide inner
surfaces.
Remedy
FIELD FIX
Replace the valve guides with new sintered type listed in the parts information section of this bulletin.
PRODUCTION FIX
All new vehicles produced after December, 1997 (after engine No. TT2634) have the new-type sintered valve guides.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
1989-98 Mirage equipped with the 1.5L (4G15) engine produced before December, 1997 (up to engine No. TT2633)
