Oxygen Sensor: Description and Operation
Oxygen Sensor
OPERATION
This vehicle uses an oxygen sensor mounted in the exhaust manifold to provide the ECU with feedback control information concerning fuel-air mixture.
The oxygen sensor is based on an oxygen concentration cell device.
Oxygen Sensor Voltage vs Fuel/Air Ratio
The oxygen concentration cell is characterized by a sharp change in output voltage at the stoichiometric mixture.
Catalytic Converter Performance
Based on information from the oxygen sensor the ECU will adjust the fuel air ratio to achieve stoichiometric combustion allowing the catalytic converter
to operate at its optimum purification rate.
