Disassemble steering gear in numbered sequence shown in Figs. 3 and 4, noting the following:
a. Remove tie rod end snap ring, then the dust cover.
b. Cut and remove band securing bellow.
c. Remove bellow securing clip, then the bellow from tie rod.
d. Unstake tab washer which attaches tie rod and rack, then remove tie rod from rack.
e. Remove rack from gear housing in direction shown, Fig. 2, to avoid damaging gearbox bushing.

Reverse procedure to assemble, noting the following:
a. Apply a coat of grease to surface of rack support that contacts the rack, then install rack support to the rack.
b. Fill inner side of rack support spring with grease, then install rack support spring to rack housing.
c. Install rubber cushion to rack support cover.
d. Apply 3M ATD No. 8663 sealant to threaded part of rack support cover, then install rack support cover to rack housing.

Adjust total pinion torque as follows:
a. Position rack at its center then torque rack support cover to 11 ft. lbs.
b. From neutral position, rotate pinion shaft clockwise one complete turn within 4-6 seconds using socket tool No. MB991006-01 or equivalent.
c. Loosen rack support cover 30-60° and adjust pinion torque to 5-11 inch lbs. from 0-90° and to 2-9 inch lbs. from 90° to rack stop.
d. If specified value cannot be reached, check rack support cover and components.
e. After adjustment, tighten support cover locknut.
