Front Steering Knuckle: Service and Repair

Replace

1.

Raise and support vehicle, then remove front wheels.

2.

Remove cotter pin, wheel bearing nut and washer.

3.

Disconnect brake caliper assembly and support using suitable wire.

4.

Disconnect lower control arm ball joint from knuckle using a suitable tool.

5.

Disconnect tie rod end from knuckle using a suitable tool.

6.

Remove drive shaft from hub, then the circlip.

7.

Remove hub and knuckle as an assembly from strut assembly.

8.

Reverse procedure to install.

Service

1.

Attach tools MB990998-01 and MB991056 or equivalent to knuckle and hub, then secure knuckle in vise.

2.

Remove hub from knuckle by tightening nut of tool.

3.

Remove dust cover, then the hub and disc assembly attaching bolts and nuts.

4.

Remove brake disc, then the inner oil seal.

5.

Remove inner bearing inner race, then the outer bearing inner race using suitable tools.

6.

Remove outer oil seal, then the outer and inner bearing outer race using a suitable punch. If either outer or inner race needs replacement, they
should be replaced as a set.

7.

Install outer and inner bearing outer race using a suitable tool.

8.

Pack outer and inner bearing inner race with suitable grease, then install bearings.

9.

Drive outer oil seal into knuckle using a suitable tool until it is flush with knuckle end surface.

10.

Apply suitable grease to lip and side lip of oil seal.

11.

Install brake disc, then the hub and disc assembly attaching bolts and nuts. Torque nuts to 36-43 ft. lbs.

12.

Install dust cover, then the inner bearing into knuckle.

13.

Rotate hub to seat bearing, then check hub turning torque. Turning torque should be 11.3 inch lbs. or less.

14.

Mount knuckle in vise, then check hub endplay using a suitable dial gauge. Endplay should be .008 inch.

15.

If turning torque and hub endplay are not as specified, hub and/or knuckle may have been installed incorrectly. Repeat service procedures.

16.

Install inner oil seal using suitable tool until it projects from knuckle to a height of .10 inch, then apply grease to lip of seal.
