1.

Release fuel system pressure as outlined under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE.

2.

Disconnect battery ground cable.

3.

Remove engine as outlined under ENGINE.

4.

Remove timing belt as outlined under TIMING BELT.

5.

Remove water pump as outlined under WATER PUMP.

6.

Remove cylinder head as outlined under CYLINDER HEAD.

7.

Remove oil pan as outlined under OIL PUMP, FRONT CASE & OIL PAN.

8.

Remove pistons and connecting rods as outlined under PISTON & CONNECTING ROD.

9.

Remove crankshaft in numbered sequence shown in Fig. 28.

10.

Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:

a. Install bearing with oil groove on cylinder block side.
b. Install bearing with no oil groove on bearing cap side.
c. Install thrust bearing to No. 3 bearing with its groove facing outside.
d. Install bearing caps so their arrows are positioned toward the timing belt side.
e. Measure each bearing cap bolt and ensure bolt is less than 2.79 inches long.
f.

Tighten bearing cap bolts to specification.

g. Ensure crankshaft turns freely and endplay is .0020-0.0098 inch.
h. Replace rear main oil seal as outlined under CRANKSHAFT REAR MAIN OIL SEAL.
